Appropriate gift for my engaged niece

My niece got engaged and has not registered and is having an engagement party. What type of gift would be appropriate?

Congratulations to your niece!
Engagement parties are kind of like a preview to the wedding. Since you're considering giving an engagement gift, I assume you'll be giving a wedding gift as well. In that case, you'll probably want to keep the engagement gift small (or smaller) than the wedding gift.

Weddings are hectic and stressful, so I recommend a wedding planner or organizer book. These are easy to find - check out your local bookstore or search Amazon.com for "wedding organizer". Plus they are inexpensive (usually $20 or less).

Other options include personalizing a gift (like a silver picture frame).

Or, if you know how long the your niece has been with her finance, you might want to consider a bonsai tree - one that was started in the same year that they met. Our anniversary gifts page has more info on that.
