Father's Day

3rd Sunday in June

June 15, 2008; June 21, 2009; June 20, 2010

Father's Day is the perfect opportunity to spoil Dad... or Grandfather... or Uncle... or anyone who deserves to be celebrated as a father figure in your life.

Father's Day originated, interestingly enough, on Mother's Day in the early 1900's when a woman named Sonora Dodd was listening to a Mother's Day sermon. Her father, William Smart, had been widowed when Sonora's mother died giving birth to their sixth child. As an adult, Sonora realized the dedication, love, and selflessness of her father who had raised his children as a single parent. Her desire and efforts to honor her father resulted in the first Father's Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on June 19, 1910. She had originally chosen June 5th (her father's birthday), but it was moved to June 19th to allow more time to prepare for the celebration.

Unexpected Father's Day Gifts

Although, in 1924, President Calvin Coolidge publicly supported the idea of a national holiday in honor of fathers, it did not become official until 1966, when President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation that declared the 3rd Sunday in June as Father's Day. And President Richard Nixon finally made the holiday a permanent (annual) one by signing it into law in 1972.

If you're looking for Father's Day gifts, don't settle for a necktie or some other stereotypical "gift for him". He deserves more than that. Look for a gift that fits his personality.
