Food Gifts

Yummm!  Steak, wine, cheese, chocolate, coffee, fruit... OK, so this group of gift ideas isn't a complicated one.  Everyone eats, right?  Therefore, food gifts are something that should go over well, as long as it's something the recipient likes to eat or drink.  And let's face it - several people not only love to eat, they sometimes LIVE to eat.  Think about it how often our activities are planned around or based on meal times.  "Let's get together for dinner!"  "How about we meet over lunch?"  "We'll talk about it at breakfast."  The wedding rehearsal dinner, the business lunch, the Mother's Day brunch... and most dates involve a meal, too!  Food is everywhere.  After all, we do eat three times a day... or more.  So you can't go wrong with food gifts!

Don't forget - food gifts also include drinks!  You usually don't have to look far to find a coffee zealot, wine connoisseur, or beer lover in your circle of family or friends.  So, when choosing a gift, why not capitalize on the fact that we all have to eat and drink and make it an enjoyable experience!  One important thing to remember for ANY type food gifts: know the eating habits or restrictions of the recipient, particularly concerning allergies, religious beliefs, and overall diet (for example, vegetarians).

Dinner Invitation

An invitation to have someone over for dinner is actually a common food gift, though it may not be thought of that way.  If you don't want to cook, or don't have the skills, you can invite someone out to dinner, perhaps to their favorite restaurant, or have them over for a catered meal... or, in layman's terms - takeout.  :)  All of these gestures, though not often perceived as giving a gift, are in fact a gift of food.  Plus they include something else as a bonus... your time and company.  That's why these should be the FIRST food gifts you should consider.  If you aren't able (or willing) to give your time along with the food, then you could consider a gift certificate to a restaurant.

Monthly Food Gifts

One problem with food gifts, similar to flowers that eventually die, is that it's a gift that will go away (i.e. after they eat it).  So it may not be something you want to give if you're looking for a gift that lasts.  To counter the temporary nature of food gifts, you can opt for a monthly gift (fruit, coffee, chocolate, steak, cheese, etc.).  These gifts, obviously, will cost you more because it's like giving 3 or 6 or 12 gifts.  But remember that the recipient will think of you each month!

Hard to Find Foods

Another avenue for food gifts is to give something that isn't easy to find:  that rare wine, or a fiery hot sauce that is only made and sold locally.  For example, the soil in Vidalia, Georgia produces uniquely sweet onions, which are made into sauces and relishes and other unique products.  You can't get these products in most supermarkets, so the fact that you went looking for them adds to the sentiment of the gift.  And be sure to personalize it by giving something particular that you know the recipient loves (not just something that is hard to find).

Sweet Tooth

Know a chocolate lover or someone who just can't resist dessert at the end of meal?  If so, a food gift should be an easy one to pick out.  Sometimes a box of chocolates is, well, pretty boring.  But not to a chocolate lover!  And what kid doesn't like to be taken out for ice cream?  (Actually, what kid doesn't like to be taken out for anything?)  Have you ever seen the reaction you get when you give a 12 year old an entire bulk size box of his favorite candy bar?  Try it!  It's not the healthiest gift in the world, but we're talking sweets, here.

Homemade Foods

Another suggestion is to make your own salsa or strawberry jam or other favorite recipe.  Homemade and canned foods make excellent food gifts to give to several different people at Christmas (they are also easier on the budget).  They make perfect gifts for co-workers and neighbors (but be sure to present it in a nice container).  However, we do not recommend giving fruitcake.  :)

Gifts for Families or Groups

Food gifts are an excellent choice when trying to find a gift for a family or group.  Because you have more than one person to please, we recommend a dinner at a restaurant with a varied menu or a gourmet gift basket with an assortment of foods.
