Gift for My Nephew

by Patty

What is the appropriate gift amount for a nephew?

Answer:
Hi Patty,
I'd love to try to help you with your gift search. Are you looking to spend a certain amount on a gift, or rather give money or a gift certificate? Is this for your nephew's birthday? How old is he?

With my own family, I almost always keep the gifts under $50, and usually not more than $30. For younger children (under 10), you can usually make them smile with a gift under $15 - they are easier to please. Of course, the older they are, like teenagers, the more they want, so that might increase my spending limit a bit. But I would still keep it under $50.

Regards,
Alison

I am sorry, I forgot that part!

It is his 1st wedding. We were thinking of $$ so they can get what they want.

We hardley see him except at famiy reunions once or twice a year.

We were just looking for the etiquette and what is the "standard".

Thanks,
Patty

Oh... a wedding gift

Hi Patty,
Oh, well, that changes things a bit. :)
You'll probably want to give money or a gift certificate/card somewhere between $50 and $100 if that is within your budget. Certainly anything over $100 would be unexpected, expecially since you don't have a particularly close relationship. They can use that for a small kitchen appliance or to help fix up their house... that kind of thing.

Think of it this way... for your wedding, if you received a $50 gift card to Home Depot or Sears from your aunt that you don't see very often, would you be appreciative? I think you would, and so will he.

Congratulations to your nephew!
Sincerely,
Alison
