to yourself so that you can give it personally, you'll always save
yourself some money if you can find gifts with free shipping and no
sales tax.
Gifts with Free Shipping
With the online merchants competing for your business, you'll see more
and more of them offering free shipping, either for particular products, on
an on-going basis for the majority of their merchandise, or for a
limited time period. Usually you'll find that gifts with free shipping
are restricted to certain delivery areas. For example, a company in
the US is likely to only offer free shipping to the 48 contiguous states
(i.e. not to Hawaii or Alaska), or a Canadian merchant will restrict
no-cost shipping to Canada. It really depends on the individual
merchant, though, as does the free delivery method, which is usually
ground shipping (which can take a bit longer). A common marketing
campaign of online merchants is to offer products with free shipping for
the holidays, so be sure to take advantage of it when looking for
Christmas gifts. Beware those
merchants who are only advertising free shipping as a hook to get you to
visit their online store and the restrictions are so limiting that it's
not easy to actually get shipping at no cost. The best way to find
out if you'll actually be getting gifts with free shipping is to select the
product(s) you want and start the checkout process. The merchant
should display the shipping cost before you confirm your purchase.
If they don't, take caution. Don't ever assume that you'll get
free shipping for a gift.

Gifts with No Sales Tax
One of the advantages of shopping for gifts online is the ability to buy
something without having to pay sales tax. An online merchant can
sell you a gift without having to charge sales tax if their company does
not have a physical presence in your state or province. (Canadian
shoppers buying from Canadian merchants will usually have to pay GST,
though.) For example, if your billing address is in New York and
you're buying from an online merchant who has a physical location in
California, then you won't be charged sales tax. This can amount to significant savings, especially on
higher priced items.
If you can find gifts with free shipping AND no sales tax, then you've
likely saved yourself a bundle. And sometimes not having to pay
sales tax can offset the cost of the shipping (if it's not free), and
you might still be saving money buying a gift online versus going to a
store where you live.
