Golf gadgets... do they really work?  Well, some do and some don't.  Some people swear by them, others aren't quite so convinced.  But what really matters is that they are fun and they make great gifts!  For the most part, if a golf accessory isn't considered essential or extremely nice-to-have, then we consider it to be a gadget, especially if it's handy!

Rangefinders and Yardage Scopes

A rangefindericon is a type of scope that tells the user how far it is to a designated target.  Obviously this information can be useful when playing golf.  You'll find that the laser rangefinders are more accurate, but they are also more expensive.  Consider your budget when picking one out.  And remember that there are other ways on a golf course to determine approximately how far you are to your target (i.e. fairway distance markers), but they're not nearly as fun or handy.

GPS Receivers

A GPS receivericon - now this is the ultimate in golf gadgets!  You put satellite technology in your pocket to measure distances.  But as with most technology, be prepared to pay for it.

Multi-Tools

There are several different toolsicon for a golfer.  They include divot repair tools, cleat/spike wrenches, grove tools, cleaning tools, and some that are a combination of two or more of these tools.  They are not really a gadget in the sense of being a gimmick or exciting technology, but they can be handy to carry in your bag with you on the course.

Shot Counters

Shot counters used to be just plastic handheld counters that you would use to tick off the number of shots, putts, etc.  Now they've gone digital!  You can still find the simple plastic ones, but if you really want to get a gadget, then look for the pda-like scorekeepersicon and handicap calculators - they even have them as watches!

Training Aids

There are several training aidsicon on the market today.  Some are just gimmicks, others will actually help.  So how to you know which ones are worthwhile?  Well, first of all, if you think you're being helped by a product, that's half the battle.  Confidence goes a long way to improving a golf swing.

In addition, there are a couple of things you can consider regarding training aids.  1) Does this product help teach correct muscle-memory motion?  A simple product like a practice chipping net will do this because in order to get results, you have to make the correct swing.  2) Is this product teaching a fundamental aspect of my swing or set-up?  If the answer to either of these questions is 'yes', then using the product will mostly be beneficial.  But for more information, search the internet for reviews on the specific product to find out what other consumers and consumer advocates have to say about it.

Other not-quite-so-gimmicky training aids are warm-up weights and strength trainersicon, where the focus is conditioning and fitness.

Bag Accessories

Golf gadgets in the form of bag accessoriesicon include a wide range of items.  For comfort when carrying a golf bag, double-strap converters are helpful (to carry the bag on both shoulders instead of one).  There's also ball holders, club organizers, rain covers, ball retrievers, and much, much more.
