Here's
how it works.
Ask yourself: Who are you giving to?
Where
do they work? Do they like what they do for a living? How do
they spend their day? Their night? Their free time? Do
they have any hobbies? Where do they live? What kind of car
do they drive? Are they married? Do they have any
kids? What about pets? The list is endless!
These are all questions
whose answers can give you the information you need to choose the
perfect gift. People notice and appreciate it when you take the
time and effort to pick out a gift that reflects WHO they are.
It's an especially thoughtful gift when you can give something that
relates to a person, pet, cause, or idea that is important to your
recipient. Notice we said to choose a subject that is "important to your recipient",
not "important to you". Gift giving is not about
you. It's about them. Some people tend to forget that and
end up giving a gift that they would like themselves. However...
Ask yourself: What's important to you?
I know, I just said "it's not about you". But, while the area of interest should stem from the
recipient's hobbies or lifestyle, you also need to consider what about
the nature of the gift is important to you. Do you need it
to be practical - something that can really be used? Is the
cost
important, or is money no object? Do you want to give something
that you're sure no one else will give - does it need to be special? Should it hold some
sentimental value? Should the
gift last for a long time so it can be enjoyed indefinitely?
First, go to Choose
It! and ask your question, such as "What gift should I
give to my brother for graduation?" Then plug in some of your
ideas based on his likes or dislikes... an MP3 player, money, cell
phone, guitar, concert tickets... anything and everything you can think
of (hint: this is where the "Who are you giving to?" part comes into
play).
Second, you'll enter what is important to you about this gift: "I can
afford it", "He will enjoy using it", "He needs
it", etc. (i.e. "What's important to you?")
Third, you'll rank how important each of these
characteristics are, and how each of the gift ideas meets those requirements.
